This was said by Qaumi Watan Party Chairperson Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao.
According to a statement issued on Saturday, Sherpao flayed Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) Chairperson Shakeel Durrani for adopting a favorable stance towards Kalabagh Dam.
Sherpao was quoted as saying the Wapda chairperson’s views on the matter were politically motivated.
“The issue was being used as a gimmick for the next election,” the document quoted Sherpao as saying. “The assemblies of three provinces had already passed resolutions against this controversial project.
As a result, infusing a new lease of life into the issue would create disharmony among the federation and its units.”
The QWP chief said the construction of Kalabagh Dam will be detrimental to the interests of locals.
“The dam will submerge Peshawar and bring destruction in the area,” he added.
Sherpao’s statement comes back to back Opposition Leader in National Assembly (NA) Syed Khurshid Shah’s comments Friday that WAPDA Chairman Zafar Mahmood should refrain from issuing statements over the Kalabagh Dam issue.
He said that a public servant should not issue statements over the matter after the passing of the resolutions. The issue of Kalabagh Dam was beyond the mandate of the WAPDA chairman, he said.
The opposition leader said that the WAPDA chairman’s statements were against the spirit of federalism.
The government shouldn’t give rise to new challenges for the federation by using WAPDA chairman,” Shah added.
