Former U.S. First Lady Barbara Bush is in “failing health.”
The office of her husband, former U.S. President George H. W. Bush, released a statement Sunday, saying the 92-year-old is in “failing health” and will no longer seek medical treatment.
Instead, the office says, she will focus on comfort care.
The statement did not describe the nature of her illness, but did acknowledge a series of recent hospitalizations, including one stay for treatment of bronchitis last year.
Her husband has also been in and out of the hospital in recent years, battling both pneumonia and chronic bronchitis.
Barbara was first lady from 1989 until the start of 1993 and became a popular national figure known for her sometimes blunt talk and self-depracating wit.
