NASA releases rare footage of SR-71 Blackbird— the fastest plane to ever exist

NASA released video footage of the SR-71 Blackbird, the high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft capable of reaching speeds over Mach 3 (2200 mph)– over three times the speed of sound.

SR-71 Blackbird is the world’s fastest manned aircraft, designed to fly higher and faster than the U-2 — at the maximum altitude of 85,000 feet, forcing crews to wear pressure suits and astronaut-type helmets.

At top speed, Blackbird’s titanium body could reach up to 900 degree Fahrenheit.

A successor, the SR-72 is reportedly in development which can reach speeds over Mach 5.
