Nawaz Sharif forced to cut speech short at London airport –after supporters turn unruly

Police had to be summoned in London after supporters of ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif turned unruly, forcing the latter to cut his speech short and leave for his residence, Geo News reported on Thursday.

Before sitting in his car, Sharif told reporters that he would address the media after a few days.

Meanwhile, it is being said that a public rally would be held in West London where Sharif would speak to his supporters from across the United Kingdom.

PML-N leader Zubair Gul told the Pakistani TV channel that disorder was caused due to inadequate security measures in place.

According to local media reports, Sharif arrived in London early on Thursday to see his ailing wife Begum Kulsoom, who is in the British capital for the treatment of throat cancer. A crowd of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supporters had gathered outside the airport to welcome their party chief. The former PM had barely spoken a few words when his supporters started raising slogans and pushed each other to get closer to their leader. This disorderly behavior of PML-N activists forced Sharif to end his speech abruptly and head for his residence.

The former prime minister will spend Eid ul Azha with his wife and sons in London, whereas, his daughter Maryam Nawaz has stayed back in Lahore to supervise the NA-120 by-election campaign in absence of her mother, who was nominated the party’s candidate from her husband’s constituency after he was disqualified by the Supreme Court in the Panama Papers case.

Maryam Nawaz disclosed last week that Kulsoom was diagnosed with lymphoma, a cancer of the lymph nodes on the left side of her neck.

Doctors have said that Kulsoom’s ailment is curable and the “treatment shouldn’t be too complicated”.
