Pakistani-British Sophia Choudhary has become the first Muslim female Mayor in the UK on Tuesday.
Sophia belongs to Pakistan-administered Kashmir and succeeded former mayor Councillor Jacqui Vosper in a ceremony, which was attended by Sophia’s friends, family, council members and other people from the Pakistani-British community of Rushmoor in Hampshire.
The United Kingdom has a sizable population of Pakistani descent. According to an estimate, the number exceeds 1.2 million.
Last year Sadiq Khan, also a Pakistani-British, became London’s first elected Muslim mayor.
While talking to a local media outlet, Sophia expressed her condolences on the recent Manchester terror attack saying that incidents like these can unfortunately divide nations.
She said she would like to take forward the work that she has done with various charities. Sophia’s father, Saleem Choudhary, also served as Mayor of Rushmoor Borough Council in 2002.
