JUL 13, 2018: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has cautioned satellite television channels that violate its code of conduct and the directives of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
The federal media watchdog also underscored relevant sections of the code of conduct that news channels are found in violation of.
“Despite issuing an advice and verbal discourse with all the licencees no significant compliance is witnessed on the television screens. Satellite TV channels are persistently airing Live marathon transmissions/press conferences by political leadership containing defamatory and derogatory content targeting various state institutions specifically judiciary and armed forces of Pakistan,” an official notification said.
Pemra also warned all channels to “ensure that no hateful, defamatory, malicious, and derogatory content/speech/press conference/paid political advertisement is aired, broadcast or televised in any manner, live or recorded, which may likely undermine the sanctity of judiciary, armed forces of Pakistan, other institutions, individuals, political parties and the electoral process”.
The media watchdog also cautioned that in the event that any license is found in violation of the outlined provisions in the notice strict action will be taken by the authority.
Meanwhile, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has warned those intending to welcome convicted former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam upon their arrival in Lahore from London on Friday against creating “any obstacle in the arrest of the convicted persons”.
Both father and daughter are coming to undergo the sentence handed down by the accountability court of Islamabad.
NAB warned that action would be taken against those who would try to create any obstacle in the arrest of the convicted individuals.
In a press release issued on Thursday, the bureau stated that “chairman NAB retired Justice Javed Iqbal has said that the accountability court’s verdict in the Avenfield properties reference and the arrest warrants issued against Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz will be executed in accordance with law”.
NAB plans to arrest the duo at Lahore airport and shift them to Islamabad by helicopter. They would be sent to Adiala jail after being produced before the accountability court.
