Islamabad: The Rohtas Gallery ends the season with a must-see exhibition of contemporary collaborative works by three young artists from Karachi - Saneeya Ghadially, Hina Farooqui and Malika Abbas. The exhibition opening today (Wednesday) is titled ‘Androoni Tajzia’ and brings together a miniaturist, a photographer and a painter, displaying mutual efforts of unique creative improvisation, annihilation and adaptation of aesthetic dimensions through diverse styles and techniques.
Going through the 13 art works put on display, it becomes apparent that the artists have experimented not only with miniature painting techniques, but also the cyanotype process, an exciting solar-based photographic printing technique that serves as a base for most of the paintings on vasli, which are then layered with gouache, tea and transparent water colour. All three artists have collaborated to create a unique fusion of ideas, techniques, and styles in an amazing aesthetic blend.
Speaking to ‘The News’ about the title of the exhibition, Rohtas Gallery Assistant Curator Alia Bilgrami said that ‘Tajzia’ means analysis and ‘Androoni’ refers to exploration within. So the works selected for the exhibition reflects the entire experience of the artists in collaborating and resolving the works aiming to dig deeper not only within themselves, but also into the images they were working with, what they stand for, and the meaning that lies beneath each layer. Saneeya, Hina and Malika have used traditional iconography and images and have given them a present-day context.
Beyond the obvious, Saneeya Ghadially’s earlier works revolves around the idea that in the fast paced lives; we tend to overlook life itself. Saneeya has worked with her idea to portray how one needs to stand still and probe life in order to really enjoy it. Saneeya talks about her works as depicting the naturalness of things, which has its own tarnished beauty. She elaborates that ‘with age everything tends to fall apart, but that in itself is what’s really beautiful. Elements and material, which have a perishable quality, give life quality, and unless you take a deeper look, you will miss out on the most beautiful parts of life.” Presenting life as an unreliable thing, Saneeya Ghadially has collaborated beautifully with her other two partners of this exhibition to interpret the significance of things in actual as compared to what we believe in. Saneeya did her Bachelors in Fine Art in 2008 from Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Karachi.
Hina Farooqui says that her work deals with camouflaging an experience, reflecting a personal rendition of an actual reality. A visual artist and contemporary miniature painter, Hina did her Bachelors in Fine Art in 2008 from Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Karachi with Majors in Miniature Painting and Minors in Photography. As an emerging artist, she has held a number of group shows in Karachi from 2007 while this is her first show in Islamabad.
Malika Abbas explored the dynamics of Islamic Manuscripts, as her inspiration to create imageries reflecting a more equal society.
With the use of a circle and a square and pattern making through an archetype, she tried to portray gender equality in her earlier works, showing that men and women are unique in their own ways and compliment each other and thus should be treated as equals unlike the scientific myth stating that men have a larger brain than women. Malika Abbas is a miniature painter and did her Bachelors in Fine Art in 2008 from Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Karachi.
The exhibition will continue till June 6 at Rohtas Gallery, House no. 57-B, Street 26, Sector F-6/2, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
