NEW YORK, June 26: An exhibition of eight Pakistani painters opened at a New York gallery on Thursday.
The exhibition features works by: Hasnat Mehmood, Akbar Ali, Nizakat Ali Depar, Farheen Haq, Ayesha Jatoi, Nazia Khan, Adeela Suleman and Risham Syed.
“The Emperor’s New Clothes”, the publication of contemporary art is curated by Dr Atteqa Ali of the National College of Arts, Lahore.
The art works will be on display at the Talwar gallery in the East Village area till September 4.
Speaking about the concept of the exhibition, Atteqa Ali said: “It is display of art works that include images of clothing, fabric, and accessories to talk about Pakistani politics, society, and identity.”
Mindful that the international mass media often portray Pakistanis in military dress or veiled from head to toe, these artists have created paintings, sculptures, and mixed-media art works that provide a more dynamic vision of Pakistan.
“Clothing”, Ms Ali pointed out “is symbolic in these art works; it is associated with distressing societal conditions and current events. It can also talk about journeys and the intricacy of how ideas and items travel in the globalised world”.
