Fashion Should Be Age Appropriate

By Aysha Ibtasam

Fashion is constantly changing from season to season. Designers are always on the edge to create new and fresh trendy apparel for individuals of all ages, sizes and flattering to all body types. It’s amazing how designers cater to countless people with different taste buds every season.

Coming from a designer, it’s not an easy challenge to constantly whip up new fashion season after season.

With so many designers offering unique styles there is always something for everyone. However, we all need to understand that we all age with time and changes occur within us; we should also reflect those changes through our sense of dressing and attire.

Everyone should be very mindful of the fact that they should adapt clothing suitable for their age, body structure and size. A garment is never cut for one trend fits all.

Elegance and beauty is revealed when it’s age appropriate. One should never look like they are going through mid life crisis or trying very hard to maintain their youth.

It’s alright to accept your age, shape and size. My research is conducted from various sources.

In your 20’s

When you are in your 20’s, it’s acceptable to wear certain pieces of clothing and maintain a young look. Logo sweatshirts, faded denim, sweatpants, pullovers and flip flops are cute and fun.

They are comfortable and sporty. You can get away with collegiate look up until certain age. Also be conscious that it’s the most important time in your life and you want to make an impression and climb the corporate ladder and be taken seriously. This is a crucial time where you enter the workforce. Bright colors call for this age.

Accessories can be experimented and you can pile the jewelry pieces on.

In your 30’s

This is a critical point in your life where day by day you become more mature and self sufficient. Work day gets longer and you are most active. This is a time where you explore other interest, hobbies and discover things which were hidden within.

The wardrobe should not be overtly conservative but chic and trendy. You want to come across business like but fun at the same time. It should not be rigid.

The attire should transit from day to night without changing. Dresses, slacks, blouses, tees, skirts, suits and blazers should be part of the wardrobe. Bold colors, neutrals and earth-tones look best. Statement pieces are recommended to highlight the wardrobe.

In your 40’s

This is a tricky age since your crossing another important age category and moving into solemn adulthood. You become fully responsible for your actions, more confident, determined, not easily swayed, focused and settled down.

All of these characteristics should be pronounced through your attire. Slacks, skirts, conservative tops and modest dresses should be part of your ensemble. Bright colors should be kept to minimum, tonal and neutral are preferred.

Piling of jewelry should shed at this point, bold and expensive pieces should be part of the ensemble.

In your 50’s

Like I emphasized earlier that dressing after certain age becomes challenging. Not because there are not enough options out there for this age group, but if it will look good on you. Baby boomers tend to get lost in a sea of trends, rules and age appropriate concerns.

Wide leg, slacks, skirts and dresses work well. You should wear clothes which are away from the body and not tight fitting. But you don’t want to wear two sizes bigger either. Softer and neutral colors are suggested; however bold colors should be avoided.

At this age, you should be comfortable with your look and it should define you. Individuals in this age category should not seek attention by ill-fitting clothes, bright colors and body skimping clothes. Your sense of style should be graceful and unchanging. It should not be spontaneous.

A bigger, bolder piece is better than multiple layers. Small items of sentimental jewelry are also a strong statement.

Another important thing to remember is that previous fashion color rules are no longer valid. Our past rules about mixing colors do not apply.

Black, navy, gray and brown can all be worn simultaneously, as can stripes and patterns.

The trick to mixing your patterns is to stay in the same color family.

Also, please let go of the rule to match head to toe. Be courageous and unmatch; this apply to all age groups.

Don’t be afraid to accept your age, body structure and size. Find clothing which caters to all your needs and look your best.
